The legal process for recovering personal injury
damages for persons who have suffered a burn injury
involves not only recovering the cost of existing
medical treatment and pain and suffering, but also
recovery of future medical expenses, lost earning
capacity, loss of family and social relations, future
psychological and/or psychiatric care, and many
other complicated forms of damages.
To establish these damages, and prove them in a
court of law, the injured party needs to retain
a variety of doctors from many different disciplines
of medicine, as well as nurses, vocational experts,
economists, and other expert witnesses. The cost
of retaining these experts can be thousands of dollars
per expert. My office advances these costs for my
clients. My office has an extensive network of physicians
and experts ready to help my clients immediately.
Scars are a major concern for people who have burn
injuries. Some scars can be remediated through revision
or skin grafts. Other scars are permanent. I help
my clients find the best doctors and experts to
evaluate their scars and find the best course of
treatment.
I personally guide my clients and their families
through this difficult process of healing and recovering
compensation. I ensure that my clients are receiving
the highest quality medical care, regardless of
their personal financial state, and regardless of
whether they have medical insurance.
As a leading cause of accidental death, burns are
exceeded in number only by car accidents and falls.
The American Burn Association estimates 1.25 million
burn injuries occur each year in the U.S.
Burns are classified by the method of the burn
and the degree. Electricity, chemicals, or radiation,
such as the sun or nuclear sources can cause burns.
Burns can be categorized by six different degrees.
Fourth degree burns damage muscles beneath the skin.
In fifth degree burns the muscle is lost and sixth
degree burns result in charring of the bone.
Nerve endings are damaged when a burn occurs, causing
intense pain. Depending on the degree of the burn injury,
in addition to skin damage, nerves, blood vessels, muscles
and bones can be affected. When burns cover large portions
of the body death occurs.
Although specialized burn treatment centers can greatly
improve the survival rates, the scarring, mobility and
reduce complications in serious burn victims, medical costs
can be astronomical. Therapy, care and rehabilitation, often
for an extended time add to the expense of recovery.
If you have suffered a serious burn injury caused by the
negligence of another, retaining a personal injury attorney
is essential. At the Law Offices of Thomas S. Geraghty, we
aggressively pursue those liable for your injury, ensuring
you receive just compensation to cover hospitalization,
treatment and rehabilitation costs.
