The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) reports approximately 7 million broken bones each year in the U.S.
The AAOS divides fractures into five types, which are:
- Simple fracture, a bone is broken in one place, but the skin is not damaged.
- Compound fracture, both the bone and the skin are broken
- Transverse fracture, the bone has broken at a right angle to the length of the bone
- Greenstick fracture, only one side of the bone is broken and the bone bends
- Comminuted fracture, the break results in at least three bone fragments
Bone fractures result from a wide variety of accidents, from car accidents, truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, slip and fall, sports and recreational accidents to acts of violence.
When a bone is broken, it must be realigned and a cast is applied to hold the bone in place, while it heals. While a cast may be sufficient to immobilize simple fractures, comminuted fractures may require surgery and other methods of called internal fixation are applied to hold the broken bone in place. Wires and other devices are used on the hand or the foot. Plates, held together by screws are often used to hold two bones together. Other methods of fixation, such as nails, rods and screws may be used depending on the nature of the break. Surgery, physician’s fees and health aid such as crutches and therapy may add to the expense of healing fractures.
Additionally, broken bones can take an extremely long time to heal, from weeks to months to years. With fractures of great severity or involving surgery, extensive physical therapy and rehabilitation may be required in order for you to heal completely. You may also incur lost wages as the result of losing the use of a limb or mobility in general.
To start, if you have suffered a broken bone, you need to consult with a good Orthopedic Surgeon. TSG helps our clients through the process of finding a good doctor and getting the appropriate medical care, even when my clients do not have medical insurance.
